Sir,—Kindly allow 1110 space to express my surprise and indigation at the contemptible meanness of some unknown person, or persons, who circulated the news that I lnd, the day before polling, backed out of the contest for the extraordinary vacancy inst filled by Mr. Hector M'Leod. 1 wish (o emphatically deny that any such arrangements were made between" Sir. M'Leod and myself, and so far as I knew, (he fight for tho seat was to be fair to the finish. If the person, or persons, originating such news, with a malicious intent to rob one of support.at nil. election, woum oniv come nut in the own. wo should find ill tliein fine specimens of humanity.—l am, etc., .
