NOTES AND COMMENTS, [By Glekcoe.] Tho Manawatu Racing Club's autumn meeting opens at Awapuni to-day. Our special correspondent at Pnlmerston North telegraphed as follows last evening:—Peculiarly enough, while rain fell in Palmerston ou Monday night, Mr. J. ; M. Johnston states that hardly any was experienced at Awapuni, and the water-carts had consequently to be kept going all night. However, about 7 o'clock on Tuesday morning, a refreshing shower fell, and this, together, with a copious drenching from tho water-carts during the past week, will put the tracks in excellent order. At tho time of telegraphing (though it has been fine all day) a storm is threatening, and heavy thunder, with vivid lightning, is being experienced a few miles down tho line. Whether it will reach hero or not U pr&blernatical, but the chances are thai ".will. . : .
Some good gallops were registered at Awapuni on Tuesday morning. Ortou and Culprit (? Mazurka)—the Stakes candidates—left four furlongs behind in 50sec. on the plough; whero all the gallops took pliioe. Kilosteri, Kauparaha, and San Lass accounted for seven furlongs in lmin. 37sec. Vibration and Rangiatun, tho Cloverlea candidates in the classic events, were associated over five furlongs, the last four being covered in SUsec. Gipsy Belle and Aloha ran five furlongs in lmin. osec, Gipsy Bello finishing well in front. Peirene did useful work. Directoiro only trotted. . Tho last-named will not race here, and it is stated that Peirene will also not sport silk here; but will go on with the filly to the Auckland meeting. The best gallop of the past two days was done by Culprit and Sunburnt, who left five furlongs behind in lmin. 2 2-ssec—a record for the track, sunburnt appeared to have the best r> the gallop, and was going fairly easy at tho' finish. 'Wairoto and a, stable companion traversed six furlongs in lmin 21 l-ssec. Effort covered the same distanoo in lmin. lWsec. Sir Geo. Clifford's team all did useful work, Masterpiece galloping' in most attractive form. C; Jenkins will rido Equitas and Daisy Pahl at the Manawatu meeting, in addition to the Poririiu horses. . He will lido Gipsy Belle in the Stakes. • Equitas figures in the Telegraph Handicap. A victory in that event for the daughter of Advance will entail 31b. additional for the A.R.C. Easter Handicap. The Stewards' Handicap winner looks as well now as when she raced at Riccarton, and is much lighter than when Lord Soult defeated her at Bulls on January 2 V The Auckland horseman, B. Deeley, is to ride Stourton and Lady Menschikoff in their Awapuni engagements, and H. Gray will be up on Kauparaha, Soultiform, Maiiupai, and Orton. At Moonce Valley on March 25 (says the Melbourne- "Age") Isaac Foulsham heralded Mr. S. P. M'Kay's return from his extended European tour by giving the ex-Western Australian sportsman the satisfaction of seeing his familiar "Soultlirie" colours carried first past the post in the. Glenroy Handicap., >; Mr. i s['Jvay,. J was. present to participate in the pleasure-of witnessing Full Sail's successful exposition prior' to his departure .this week < to Randwick,- where his objective will be the Doncaster Handicap, for which Saturday's victory has promoted him to one. of the foremost positions in public estimation. In certain inspired quarters provision had been made for this expected denouement, and Full Sail promises to harden in point of popular opinion. The field which feull Sail so cleverly silenced was unusually "classy" for a suburban course, and in the. Doncaster Handicap at Randwick he will not have to carry any oxtta weight as a result. of his Moonee Valley victory. Full Sail's weight in the big mile race is Tst. 41b., or 51b. less than he carried on Saturday, when he cut out the l seven furlongs in lmin. 29J sec; As the going will probably bo faster at Rardwick, Fnll Sail will in all likelihood be able to get homo inside lmin. idsec, all going well with him.
