—.. $.__ THE POLICEMAN WINS. At about -1.30 p.m. yesterday, two men entered Flockton's store in Manners Street, and one of ; them disposed of a couple of articles for the sum of a shilling. After their departure, the salesman at the store noticed that some knives, forks, and .spoons that had been near the door were missing, and communicated with the police. • Half an hour later, the salesman observed what he took to be something ljko the two men in Manners Street, and pointed them out to Constable Gordon, who made after, them, and came up with them in Farish Street. The constable then observed that one of them had some knives showing from the inside pocket of his coat, and questioned him concerning them. The man did'not stay to parley, neither did ho stand upon the order of his going, but bolted into Old Customhouse Street, with the constable in pursuit, the chase following the direction of Lombard Street into Manners Street once more. Meanwhile Sergeant Lyons had observed a crowd of spectators at the top of Parish Street. They acquainted him of the little drama which was going on, and stated that the fugitive had run up Herbert Street and into Edward Street. The sergeant eventually effected the arrest of a man at the back of a private residence, where a fence'' proved an insurmountable obstacle. Proceedings follow to-day.

Argument in the Court of Appeal case Harry M. Skect and John Dillon, appellants, v. Joseph C. Nicholls, respondent, an appeal from n writ prohibiting the Commissioner of Crown Lands from issuing a license for a water-race, was resunied i yesterday. Mr. J. W. Salmond (So-licitor-General), with him Mr. W. F. Inder, of Gore, appeared for the appellants, and Mr. J. IT. Ilosking, K.C., with him Mr. IT. Buddie, for respondent. The case occupied the Court until after midday, when an adjournment was made because Mr. Hosking, who had been engaged in a long and strenuous argument with the Bench, became unwell. At two o'clock Mr. Ilosking was not sufficiently recovered to proceed, and the case was further adjourned.

The G'aliforninn woollen mills have, states a cable message in n Sydney paper, received an order for heavy blankets from the United States War Department to the value of .£IOO,OOO. Delivery is to commence at once, and to end before December 31. The order is an unprecedented one.
