MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterlon, March 31. Tlio sitting of tho Suprcinc Court this week lias been the most important since the circuit was instituted. His Honour tlie Chief Justice has been sitting night and clay, and the business lias been got through with expedition. The foundations of the courthouse are now being put in, and it is hoped that, in the course of a few months, tho present badly-ventilated and ill-arranged courthouse will be replaced by something more in keeping with the importance of the district. Constable Dunn, who has been stationed at Alasterton for the last two or three, years, severs his connection with tho police, force to-day. He intends proceeding to South Africa, where one of his brothers occupies an important position in the Civil Service. Tho annual meeting of the Endeavour Lodge, 1.0.G.T.. was held last evening, Bro. Anderson, C.T., presiding. During the evening a handsome case of silver teaspoons and tongs, and a silver and crystal smelling-salts bottle, was presented to Sister Jl'Lcan on the occasion of her approaching marriage. A number of draught horses, including not a few of the best fillies of the district, have been shipped this week to Australia through the agency of Messrs. Hoult and Son, of Feilding. It .is thought by some that the exportation of fillies may result in a deterioration in tho quality of local stock. The good feeling which exists between different branches of the railway service was demonstrated last evening, when a combined smoke concert was held in the I'orester.s , Hall by the Officers' Institute and the. local branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, "here was a large gathering of representatives of both divisions of tho service, and an enjoyable evening was spent. In responding to the toast of tho A.S.K.S., Mr. W. A. Veitch. the president, gave an interesting address on tho aims and aspirations of the society. ;Sjr Robert Stout stated, at the civil sitting of the Supreme Court yesterday, that, at almost every sitting over which he presided, disputes came on for hearing which were caused by the slip-shod business methods of one or more business men. Several fine crops of rape are at present to be seen in paddoclts along the road between .JVlasterton and Oreytown. Tho work of installing tho tiro' alarm boxes in Masterton is now being proceeded with. Five circuits, with twelve alarm boxes, are to he erected in various parts of,the town. During the past quarter, only five alarms have been sounded on the local hrebcll.' Of these, only one turned out to bo a fire in a building. Inspector Hugo is to make an inspection of the Masterton Fire Brigade and Fire Police at an early date. Mr. Fred Butement, of the firm of Cochrane and Butement, land agents, of Masterton and Te Kuiti, has decided to relinquish business in order to take up farming pursuits in the Hunterville district. The Rov. C. H. Olds, who has been supplying the pulpit in the Masterton Methodist Church, in the interregnum between the resignation of the Rev. C. Porter and the appointment of a successor, preaches farewell services on Sunday. Ho leaves next week to take up work in Wellington. Mr. S. V. 'Whitcombe, District Traffic Manager of Railways, was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. An "Oaks" race, in connection with tho Masterton Homing Pigeon Club was flown from Wellington yesterday, and was won by Mr. F. Rossoii'r, team. Seven teams competed. The first annual "social" in connection with the employees of the AVaingawa Freezing Works was held at Clarevillo last night, and was a highly successful affair.
