Sparks wero ascending from a "blast" in a coach factory, 'and a passer-by thought "the premises were on tire, hence the alarm. : Captain Peach, of the Jlanawatu Mounted Rifles, and Lieut. Louisson, of the Palmerston RiUes, have resigned their commissions, ;bbtli finding, the pressure of privato business. too. much to allow of them giving tho necessary time to their military duties. Both officers were extremely popular in their corps, and much regret is felt at their retirement. At a.meeting of the committee of the local branch of the Society for the Prevention'of Cruelty'to. Animals (tho president, Mr. .J. H. Hankins in the chair), the report of the inspector showed .that since January 27 twenty-one cases had been <le;.lt with, several of them necessitating the destroying of animals. Tho 'annual report and.balance-sheet, as.drawn up by. the-president, were approved, and. will be presented to the annual meeting on April 7. '......' ' . " / ' The balance-sliest in connection with the late sports gathering of the Manawatu Amateur Athletic Club, submitted to a meeting of the committee last evening, at which Mr. T. Stubbs presided, showed a credit of £6. Votes of thanks were accorded the Borough Council for refunding tho ground rent and to Messrs.. D. E. Dustin, D. Park, and 11. T. Plyger for valuable assistance. It has been decided to hold a 2ve-mile road race on April 20. The New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders' Association has allotted its gold medal for Jersey classes to the Auckland A. and; 1\ Association this year. There are now 2000 animals-registered in the 1 Herd Books-and the membership of the association totals 103. Tho members of tho Racing Commission arrived in Palmerston yesterday, but did not stay long, going straight on ..by motor-car to Hawke's Bay, where a number of. racecourses have still to be inspected. Several courses in the Poverty Bay and Eotorua districts have yet to bo inspected, but when these have -been seen, tho duties of the commission in this direction will be about complete. .During the past three months there have been four bankruptcies in the Mauawatu district. The annual meeting of tho local branch of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society was held last night, tho president (Mr. K. O. Hurley) in the chair. The report stated that.there had been a loss of revenue through the closing of the shooting season for various kinds of game. The number of fishing licenses issued was' 192, as against IGI the previous year. .Thirty-five thousand trout fry and 250 yearlings had been distributed in various streams during the year, and the keeping of Jish in the fountain in the Square had again proved most satisfactory, thanks being due to Mr. J. Jlortensen fiu- keeping these at Ins own expense. It was , stated that it was proposed to establish hatcheries in Palmevston ns soon ap funds would permit. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr. E. O. Hurley; secretary and treasurer. Mr. T. Stockwell: committee, Messrs. E. O. Hurley, T. Stockwell, .T. Mortenson, F. Shortt, J. D. Smith,'G. M'Donald L. George, and H. Miller; auditor, Mr. C. H. Smith.; At a subsequent-meeting of the committee correspondence was read from the Wellington- Society.- advising the local branch to ayply to the nolice for assistance in preventing poaching. . During the month of March there wore 'i births, 15 deaths, and K marriages in Palmerston. For the quarter just ended tho figures were—Births 112, deaths 3G, marriages '12. There was no rainfall in Palmerston diiiing the month of March. For the past three months the total fall has been 3.85 in. A branch of tho Professional Musicians' Society is about to be formed in Palmerston. A meeting of the Citizens' League—ratepayers generally also bring invited-r.-as held at tho Municipal Hall last night, there being a large attendance. Mr. R. H. Abraham occupied the chair, and with him on tho platform were also the nine candidates wlio have been selected by the league to contest tho municipal election. Three member l : of the league. Messrs W Park, W. L. Fitzherbert, ami T. Dodgers gave their ideas on trams, library, swimming baths, and water supply respectively.
