(By Telecraph.—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, April I. The prediction of Mr._ Howavth, the Harbour Board's engineer, a week ago that there would be a further improvement on the bar very shortly-was fulfilled to-duy, when the pilot found the least depth in the bar channel to be 19 feet. This was in one place only, and the bottom fell well away on either side of it into deeper water. Mr. Howarth predicts a continued increase of depth, and exnects to sco 20 feet before very long. The vital statistics for March are:— Births, ii (previous March. , . iS); deaths. 9 (15); marriapres. Iβ (23). For the quarter ended March 31 the births were 127 (same qunrtor ln=t rear, 132); deaths, 33 (39); marriages, dO (Gl). • The Customs receipts for March were.£s722 10s. 3d.
