EELS AND BATHERS.

Sir,—ln your issue of March 27 I have road with interest the experience of some bathers who wore attacked by a fresh water eel. About six years ago I had a similar experience. A companion and I were bathing in the Hautapu River, near Taihape, and wo .were both attacked by a largo ocJ. I got oft' with but a slight pinch, but my companion, who laughed at my alarm, was almost immediately seized on Hip calf of the leg, and badly bitten, having considerable difficulty in getting himself free. I havo related my experience in time past to several friends, who havo looked sceptically at me, and have put my narrative down as a capital "fish yarn." I was dad to' see the case reported yesterday for I believe that at this season of the year eels are apt to prove at the very least a very unpleasant feature of river bathing.—l am, etc., STANLEY M. DIXON. Mangaweka, March 23.
