RISKS AT LYALL BAY.

Sir,—As frequently the Lyall Bay beach is visited by bathers totally unaware of any danger "in surfing there after rough weather, I would be pleased if you could give some publicity to the fact that the surf is often very treacherous and dangerous. I'or instance, take last Sunday, when the draw-back was most deceptive. One bather in the more popular part of the beach was carried out, and was only rescued just in the nick of timo by another visitor. I hear, also, that two other bathers were in difficulties also, through' going out in the afternoon to exactly the same place, they previously.went into in the morning. Now, if the City Council's attendant finds a heavy undertow to exist, would it not be a much better safeguard if, when bathers were about, he kept going up and down the beach, and, when necessary, cautioning anyone who might be unacquainted with the danger they arc incurring by going out too far? Besides, ho would then also.be ready for such like emergencies as tho above-mentioned. Also, au inexpensive notice board, if' jjlaccd near the'tram terminue in'a jro-j

mincnt place would be a boon and safely to would-be bathers, if a notice was displayed thereon by tho attendant cautioning bathers should (he state" of (he surf be anyway dangerous.. Another matter which would be a considerable advantage would bo if the council and the Wellington Surf Club cooperated and arranged to place their rescuing reels at equally-divided distances along the beach, instead of, as at present, both together in tho . least-frequented bathing spot on the. bench.—l am, etc., BEACIIKR.
