ROADS AND BY-LAWS.

A PECULIAR POSITION. (By Telecrapb.—l'rcs3 Association.! Danjavillc, March 29. An extraordinary position in connection with the Ooroufih Council taking over several private roads has arisen. During the term of the last- Mayor it was decided to accept the dedication of certain roads when the by-laws had been complied with. Recently the county engineer supplied the borough,' with a certificate that the roads were in conformity with the 'resolutions of the council by-laws, and in consequence the deed of dedication was signed by the pre-nit Mayor, Mr. Darjaville. Considerable public interest is now aroused, and a deputation waited upon the council last night, and pointed out that the roads, instead ol bsing 42 fret wide as required bv the by-laws, were in some places onlv HO feet between (he water tables. The council's solicitor was presnit, and said that the position as far as he knew was unique, inasmuch as the deed of dedication had b:'en signed and sent to the District Land Registrar in Auckland. If the statements now made were true the council could write to the Registrar asking him not to confirm the dedication. He expressed surprise that the question had not been raised before the deed was signed. The Mayor made a lengthy explanation, showing that before ho took office the council had agreed to lake ov?r the roads when completed to the satisfaction of the engineer. The lattcr*s certificate having been forthcoming recently he signed Ihc deed in accordance with the resolution of the council. He maintained that no local authority could go beyond the report of the engineer. It was decided that a full inquiry be made, the engineer to report on the allegations, and that if found correct the borough solicitors .be requested to write to the Registrar asking him not to confirm the dedication for the present.
