DISCHARGED PRISONERS' AID.

A meeting of the Discharged Prison- , ers' Aid Society was held tnis' week in . the Chief Justice's room, Judges Chambers. Sir • .Robert Stout . preside',!. Others present were: Mrs. E. .Richmond, Messrs.' T.' M. Wilford, K Arnold,' J.P., T. Lambert, J .P., and 15. Cummings. 1 Tho report stated, inter. alia, that during tho last few months some nine ex-prisoners had -refunded £7 Is. ud. ill appreciation of tho help* given. Somo very sad cases had como before tho oilicers, revealing instances of those both mentally and physically unlit to work. There had also been cases of wives of prisoners who had been left destitute. Under present law the prisoner does not contribute to tlieir support. An animated and rather interesting, discussion on' the reform of criminals followed tho presentation of tho report. Sir; Robert Stout gavo a sketch of tho work in America of the "Young Criminal Reform Republic." He pointed out tlio splendid results which had accrued therefrom. _ Tlio acquisition of Mrs. E. Richmond as a member of tho society is expected to bo a boon for femalo prisoners, she taking a keen interest in tlieir wellbeing. She brought sovoral matters before the meeting.'• J. . - • ' On the motion of Mr.- Wilford a sincere and' hearty vo.to of- thanks was rtccorded to Sir: Robert Stout for tho deep interest lib lias taken ill' tho work and his" kindness ;in presiding. A vote of thanks to tho officers was also unanimously carried. .Eighty-six ex-prisoners have been helped in various ways: 28 with 67 meals, and 52 bods liavo been provided, 13 with fares to various places to work, 14 with groceries and coal, ctc., eight with clothes, and 23 with cash. : The following is the statement of accounts :— • ... £ s. d.
