LIONESS AND TIGRESS DIE.
SUFFOCATED IN A TUNNEL. (By Tdcttrnpli.-Spccitil, Correspondent.) Auckland, March 24. Messrs. Wirth Bros., of circus farao, have lost about half a down animals sineo they arrived in tlio Dominion, including a lioness, a tigress, a kangaroo, ami n hyena. Tho New Zealand climate does not agree with soino animals, and in some eases pneumonia was contracted with fatal results. Tho death of tho lioness and tigress through suffocation in tho K a ran gall a Ice tunnel occurrcd last week.' Whilst tho circus was travelling by Epceial train between Waihi and Paeroa, tho train was blocked in tho tunnel for a tinio, and tho loss of tho animals attributed to tho stoppage. Tho question of taking action against tho Railway Department is being considered by the proprietors of tho circus,' but no decision has yet been arrived at.
