Among tho ,inany cases which aro being attended I to are those of cruelty and desertion, as I well as cases of tho reported' neglect iof children. Farowsll Entertainmant. Something of a. departure in the way of farewell entertainments took plac*. last evening when Mr. Peter Clarke, who is leaving Wellington to, join Dr. Bell in the capacity of private secretary] .was the guest of honour at a "handkerchief and sox" evening, given him by his friends. There' were several competitions, and a very enjoyable time was spent with songs, recitations, whistling, and flute solos. Miss A. Segrief and Mr. Ellers contributed songs, Mr; Borneo Gardiner whistling solos, Mr. M'Donald flute solos, and Miss B. Segrief recitations. Miss Doris Webb proved to be' tho winner of one of the competitions. Somo of those present were the Misses Segrief (3), MrS. Healey, tho Misses AVilliams (2), Webb (2), Simon, Dr. Hayward, and Messrs. Gallagher,. Gardiner, Ellers and Clarke.

Delightful weather ■ favoured the Opaki'races, held, on Thursday and Friday of this week. ,So often when they have taken plaeo the rain and. the wind seemed to have made up their minds that'they .would do their worst to make the days as unpleasant as possible, that people began to think they were forever doomed to misfortune. > Opaki, in fine -weather, 'is very pretty, and a day spent there when, racing takes -place is as9y. to bejloflke'd' forward.. ,of those present on the first day were Mrs. o.' G. Williams, a violet line coat and skirt, and' Tuscan hat, trimmed with black velvet and roses; Mrs. H. Francis, a shot "silk" gown "with-lace vest, and. white straw hat trimmed with shaded ribbon; Mrs. J. B. Moodie, a pale bluo ninon frock and hat to match; Mrs. Monckton, a saxe blue ninon, and black straw hat with-plumes;. Mrs. A.' Beetham, pink •linen coat ami skirt, and pink straw hat with ribboii Mrs. ,V. Donald, blue .linen coat arid skirt; and burnt straw' hat trimmed with blue ribbon; Mrs. H! Donald, dove grey oqstume, and hat to match; Mrs. ,0.: Smith, cream tussore costume, and- ; cream hat with roses; Mrs. J. Sella'r, blue crone de chine •frock and bluo hat; Mrs. P. Harrison, white frock and.black hat with plumes; Miss Holmwood, brown linen costumes, and brown straw 4iat with roses; "Miss Bunny, navy costume and pale blue hat. There were also present the Misses Pilmer. (2), Baird, Marsh, Pickering, Holmes, and others.
The engagement'is announced of Miss ' Olive Bayly, third, daughter of the late Mr. Daniel Bayly, of Wanganui, to Mr. Stanley Rankin, of Brooklyn, Wellington.
Mrs. and Miss : Wolters, who came down to be present-at the Dolores, concerts, returned to Carterton yesterday.
Mrs. Tylee, of Makuri, is visiting Wellington, and is'staying at the' Occidental Hotel. ■ •
Tho engagement is announced of Miss Ella Rothschild, daughter of Mr. I. J. Itothschild, of Sieverst-on Terrace, to Mr. F. H. Pope, of Auckland.
Miss -Amy Moss, of Auckland,-passed through Wellington yesterday on her way south for a visit.
Mr., Mrs., and Miss Cockburn, of Melbourne, who liave been visiting Itotorua and other places of interest, have arrived in town, and are staying at tho Occidental Hotel.

Miss Gaisford, of Hawke's Bay, was a visitor to the Opaki race's on Thursday.
■Mr. C. J. M'Cnrthy and Mrs. M'Carthy arrived in Napier on Thursday after an absence of fifteen years, during which time ho has been in various parts of the world studying refrigerating machinery.
