The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Whakatane, in continuation of her voyage from St. John to Auckland and Wellington, left Sydney for the northern port yesterday. She is due here about today week. AFGHANISTAN AT MONTE VIDEO. Advico received by cable by the New Zealand Shipping. Company intimates that the chartered steamer Afghanistan, which left Auckland on February for London, made a call at Monte Video ou Monday last. BAD WEATHER AT WAITARA. Tho departure of the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Orari, from Waitara, has been delayed owing to bad weather. She will not leave there until this morning, and is duo here to-morrow. Consequently on-the foregoing her departure for Lyttclton has also been set back. ARAWA'S DISCHARGE DELAYED. MISHAP TO DONKEY ENGINE. Sinco early yesterday morning the work of discharging the Arawa'a Homo cargo has been delayed owing to the donkey engine plant failing. A small portion of the ship's cargo was taken out by means of the Harbour Board's cranc3, but none of the vessel's winches could be worked. Repairs have been effected, however, and it is probable that work will be in full swing again this morning. It is likely that the Arawa's departure for Lyttclton will be delayed for a day or two in consequence of the mishap.

Daybreak to-day is the time fixed for the F.-H.-S. steamer Surrey to leave port lor Timaru, Lyttelton, nnd Avonmouth. Miss Dixon, late stewardess on the Tarawcra, joined the Mapourika yesterday in place of Miss Cross,; v;ho in going Home in the Karaiuca. The Durham is to leave port at noon today for Picton and the Bluff eu route for London. 1 At present receiving a. thorough overhaul at Lyttelton, the steamer Defender is expeeted ta arrive in Wellington towards the end'of', next week. A preliminary inquiry into the circumstances surrounding a slight collision between the steamer Wairau and the scow Oban iu the Wairau River recently was held by the Collector of Customs at Wellington yesterday. The papers have been forwarded to the Marine Department for further consideration. Tho Oban was found to be slightly damaged, but the Wairau received no injury. The evidence of the crew of the Oban has been taken at Blenheim, and will be forwarded to the Marine Department. The Tyser Line's steamer Mirairo has been chartered to load a general cargo at Now York for Australian ports, under the auspices of the A. and A. Line. t>he is to sail on April 10. The barque Ariel has now been 125 days at sea on the voyage from Liverpool to Wellington. Captain Lambert, master of the Arahnra, who has- been on a holiday trip to Australia, returned to Wellington by the Manuka yesterday. .Captain Norton was also a passenger by the vessel. It was stated in Thk Dominion* of March 17 that a new shipping company had been : formed, this line to be called the Opouri j Shipping Company. It is now announced ; that the new line will operate between I Nydia Bay and Lyttelton.
