WHARF BARRIERS.
— -9 ■ In his statoment at tho annual meeting of the Harbour Board last evening the Chairman said:— Owing to the unseemly conduct of a section of tho public on the wharves on the occasion of the arrival and departure of vessels, and complaints of a serious nature having been made to the board, of overcrowding, the climax was reached in December last on the arrival of tho Rotorua, and it was quite evident that something would have lo be done to cope with what was becoming a nuisance. I took upon myself tho responsibility of giving instructions to erect barriers, by means of chains placed across that part of the wharf, in tho vicinity of the berth [it which the vessel was arriving or departing, in order to check the crowd so that the officers of the board should have proper control and passengers could embark and disembark in somo degree of comfort and not be subjected to annoyance, amounting in some cases to a positive .disgrace to the port. A system of passes was inaugurated, and the scheme has worked admirably; it has been much appreciated by all.
