« (By Tclceraph.-Spccial. Correspondent.) Palmorston North, March 20. At the Police ( Court to-day, bsioro .\lr, A. J), 'rnomson, S.M., a young man named John Sullivan was brought up on remand on a charge of stealing M 10s. .(tue property of Uric Thompson) trom a local notel. Accused pleaded not guilty, and elected to be dCait with summarily. Alter evidence had been given hy several witnesses, ,Sub-Inspector Norwood stated that, though accused had never been. convicted before, he was suspected ot committing several thefts. Money had been lost irom two hotels in which accused had staved whilo in Wanganui, and a bookmaker, who had been lriendly with accused, had lost X'oO under suspicious circumstances. Accused had done no work for a year, aud was described as a "racecourse Kue«ser" The magistrate expressed the opinion that the theft was very deliberate aud had been planned, and he sawno'reason for leniency. He would sentence the prisoner to six months with hard labour. Ellen Thompson was sentenced to a month's imprisonment on a charge of being an idle aud disorderly person. A number of cases of of borough and railway by-laws were heard and fines imposed. During the rush to the fire in Taonui Street yesterday, a motor cyclist came into collision with a little girl riding a bicycle. Fortunately the motorist was only going at a flow pace, and the co 12sequences were not tenons. Both riders were thrown, but cscapcd pra:lically mihurt.
