PUBLIC-SPIRITED WORK IN WANGANUI. (By Telegraph.—Special CorfespondenU Wanganui, March 19. At .the final meeting, of the committee of the recent garden feto in aid of the Beautifying Society's Funds a balanceshdel; was presented and adopted showing the total receipts in connection with the fete to be ,£521 3s. 5d., and the expenses .£ll3 4s. 9d„ leaving a clear profit ot ,£407 18s. Bd. This amount, which excceds the most sanguine expectations, will onablo the society to carry out. A good beautifying programme this year. The society, during the preseut week, received a shipment of ■ several hundred ornamert.il trees from Japan, uhilo others arc en Hie way from Australia. Working bees started the seasonVwork to-day by plantnig out Jnpanese trees and every Saturday lor the next six months will sw a working bee or bees busy in various districts under the society's care. So far the parent society has four district branches working under it, and steps are being taken to form new ■ branches at Gonvillc and Castleclifr. Among the activities of the Wanganui East branch may bo mentioned a proposal, which will probably bo carried into effect this year, It plant an avenne of scarlet (lowering gums nearly a mile in length, A similar scheme is in contemplation by the St. John's branch, which proposes to plant the sides of the railway line between St. John's and Aramoho with the same trees and also (lowering wattles.
