THE ELINGAMITE WRECK.

APPLICATION FOR REHEARING. The case of Captain Attwood And the wreck of' tho Elingamito was brought before the Minister for Marino (the Hon. J. A. Millar) on Saturday by Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P, Mr. AYilford said ho had been asked by the sea captains in Wellington to act for Captain ■ Attwood in refcrcnco to; tho question of a rehearing of his case in regard to tho wreck of tho Elingamite. Charts had been furnished giving Captain Attwood's, position and tho courso he had taken as defined on the chart at tho time he gave evidence, with tho Three Kings in tho position in which they were marked then, and also in tho position in which they wero defined recently by tho Cambrian. Mr. Wilford had been informed by export nautical men that the courso steered by Captain Attwood on the night of the wreck would, if tho Three Kings had been properly charted, have clcared them by three miles. This would have made a tremendous difference. He wanted to ask the Minister for Marine to furnish Captain Attwood, who was not a man of means, a copy of the evidence taken at the marino inquiry in reference to tho wreck; and also to ascertain whether procedure could ho adopted to allow additional cvidenco to bo taken under the new conditions and circumstances. In the Law Courts a new hearing could, be called if evidence wal available which was not forthcoming when tho case was first heard. . The Minister said lie would consult tho , •Crown Law Officer. Tliero we.s no doubt that three miles made aIL tho difference. Of course, he would not say that Captain Attwood would-have cleared tho island until he raw the charts. But if it could bo shown that this was so, Captain Attwood must not bo allowed to remain with any stigma upon him. As far as he was personally concerned, ho would giva Captain Attwood every opportunity possible to clear himself. Mr. Wilford said they were not considering the question of recompense, but merely the getting of Captain Attwood's name cleared.
