I HE DENOUNCES MACHINERY. (By Telegraph.—Spccial Correspondents Palmerston North, March IS. A representative of the Wellington Carpenters' and Joiners' Union has been in i'almerstoir for some weeks, organising the workers in this trade. The main planks o£ the award to be demanded have been framed. They comprise « forty-four hours' week, with minimum pay of Is. fid. per hour. Double time is to be paid for work on holidays such as Christmas Day, etc., and time and a half for ordinary holidays. Travelling (up to five miles from a workship) is to be allowed at the rate of three miles an hour, walking, and preference (o unionists is of course asked. , At a meeting of workers in this trado on Friday night, the representative of the union mentioned gave an address, in which he stated that New Zealand was the model country of the world for workers. Ho went on to say that the week for carpenters should not be more than 'to hours with a much higher rate of pay than at present; and that machinery was the curse of the world, inasmuch as it put large numbers of men out of employment!,
