LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION.

—4 TOUR OF THE KING COUNTRY. (By Telegraph,—Press Association.) Auckland, March 17. Mr. Massey, leader of tho Opposition, returned to Auckland last night, after a tour of tho King Country. lio said to-day ho was impressed with the evident signs of development since his last tour of tho district, Settlement has made considerable progress. Tho curse of tho King Country, however, is as acute as over in Mr. Massey's opinion, and the progress, of Kawhia town and district in particular is being strangled because of the vast areas of locked up Nativo land which exist. Kawhia itself is simply circled by miles of Native land, which lies idle and unproductive; and through which the Europeans have to make roads in order to reach their own settlements in tho back-blocks. He has been placed in possession of fuli facts and figures of tho conditions obtaining in the King Country, and intends bringing the question fully beforo Parliament- next session.
