FREE BATHS.
A BOON TO THE WHARF LABOURER. Some time ago the Harbour Board decided to provide free baths for its employees on the wharves, and these aids to comfort and cleanliness- will be available for use within a day or two. The proposal to provide the baths was first raised by Mr. R, Fletcher, the present chairman of the board, in April, 1908. At the same time he proposed the institution of wharf barriers, of the kind that have lately been adopted. Each proposal has taken three years to mature. . Tho baths now being provided are situated on the first floor of the X Store, in close proximity to tho Sailors' Rest. A range, of eight enclosed 6hower-laths has been constructed, and close at hand half a dozen wash-hand basins have been provided. Hero the wharf labourer, coming tirod from his day's work, may luxuriate in hot or cold water as his desires dictate. Ho will bo faced by no other expense than is involved in bringing along his own towel, soap, and dressing-case. Lockers have not as yet been provided, but Mr. Fletcher stated yesterday that, if the baths are appreciated, and it is shown that lockers are necessary, tho board would no doubt bo ready to supply them. Tho matter, so far as it has gone, was purely an experiment.
