ENTERTAINMENTS.

THEATRE ROYAL. The present week's programme at the Theatre Royal is an extremely attractive one. The Elliott Sisters, a clever juvenile trio, executed n popular turn, and came in for much applause. George Sparkes, coloured comedian, again had to respond to several encores for his songs and dances. The Tasmanian soprano, Miss .Mabel Fowler, enhanced the favourable impression her appearance on the previous evening created. All the. other performers, including Rupert Cuthbert, and .Miss Maud Fanning, were well received, and an interesting biograph film brought a very pleasurable evening to a conclusion.

HIS MAJESTY'S. The very excellent picture entertainment at His Majesty's this week is attracting the attendance it deserves. The "Golden Supper" came in for a deal of praise, and the Wild \YostJ views—"Two Boys in Blue," am) "On the Mexican Border"—were among the most popular shown. The public taste seems never to tire of this class of subject. The story with a moral teaching, "Billy's Bible," is a compact, clever representation of war in South Africa, thrilling in its incidents, and it ends happily with a good, wholesome lesson. It is interesting to see the way in which salmon-are netted and taken to the canning factories; and it is equally diverting and instructive to follow tfm chief events in the latest Rathe "Gazette." Some extremely comical skating eccentricities arc executed in the course of the film, entitled "Ma-in-Law." Altogether the collection is above the average.

KING'S THEATRE. The "Golden Supper," a pictorial representation of one of Tennyson's beautiful poems, was again popularly acclaimed at the King's Thcatro last evening. This delightful film should not bo missed, for it marks an advance- in kincmatography. "Nine of Diamonds" has its dramatic appeal, and "The Abbey of Para," a typical and stately old hall, is very charming, while the series of views of Vienna and the Rathe Gazette are full of _ general interest. The comedy subjects arc, if anything, above the average this week; indeed, some of the situations created are excruciatingly exaggerated and ab-

ANTONIA DOLORES. Mademoiselle Dolores is a great favourite in Duncdin, and sang to very big audiences in tho southern city. The '"Limes" head their notice "A Brilliant Performance," and comment as follows: —That those present wero privileged to hear vocalisation but- rarely heard in Dunedin is beyond dispute, for Mademoiselle Dolores has reached a stage in her art that few attain. And apart from tho close study she must have given to music, Mademaisolc has evidently the finest instincts of tho musician—the artistic temperament that is so essential to Complete success, and never fails to make itself felt with an audience. To sing for practically two hours is somewhat exhausting, -and though Mademoiselle showed no sign in Elns direction, and was singing as freshly at the close of the concert as at the beginning, the heavy work must havo affected her. Her very last song, "Home, Sweet Home," was a treat to listen'to, and was sung as- sweetly as anything given during tho evening. To say that Mademoiselle's singing was appreciated does not adequately convoy an idea of the reception it met with. The audience-, was enthusiastic, and in one instance almost went as far as cheering tho singer. Mr. John Prouso will assist during- the-"Wellhigtoiv.season. Tho box plan opens to-day.

"SWEET LAVENDER," To-night the Wellington Dramatic Society will commence their season of Sir, Arthur Pinero's charming comedy "Sweet Lavender" at the Opera' House in aid oi the Boy Scout movement..The Boy Scouts will march from the Government Station, Newtown Post Office, and the Basin Reserve to tho Opera House. Tho box plans have been filling rapidly, the last few days, and there is every indication of "Sweet Lavender" being greeted by a full house. ' The Dramatic, Society.has arranged to give a special performance of "Sweet Lavender" on St. 'Patrick's night, March 17, at the Opera House. Scout tickets will only be available on the first two nights. The box plan, for tho season is now open at'tho Dresden',

YACHTING EXCURSION AND CONCERT. Tho Port Nicholson Yacht Club will take advantage of the settled weather and bright moonlight- to hold an excursion to Day's Bay and a concert in the pavilion this evening. This is really the most seasonable time of the year for outings of such an attractive character, and as tho weather appears to be settled for a spell, there is every prospect of a fine evening and an enjoyable entertainment. The Duchess is to" leave for Day's Bay at 7.45 p.m. sharp, and whilst there a concert will bo given in the pavilion, in.which Mrs. Mitchell, Mr. Dave Kenny, and Mr. Hillickcr ('cellist) will .be concerned. The Duchess will leave again for town at 10 p.m.

THE SHEFFIELD CHOIR, A special Empire supplement bar, been issued by the London "Musical Courier," giving much interesting information about the Sheffield Choir, its promoter, Dr. Charles Harriss, and those who arc- interesting themselves ill its tour of the world, to commence this week. , Tho supplement is. freely illustrated, giving portraits 'of all tho leaders and patrons of tho movement, the leading musicians of tho countries being visited (including pconlo of musical note in-New Zealand), and many of tho balls which the choir will sing in. Among the portraits are thoso ■of Lord Islington, Sir Joseph Ward, Mr. Mauglian Barnett, Mr. Robert Parker, Mr. Lawrence Watkins, Mr. Horace Hunt, Mr. R, T. Caldow, and Miv Hugo Gorlitz (representative for Dr. Harriss in .New Zealand).

THE NEW THEATRE. The New Theatre will be the name of the rejuvenated Federal Theatre, in Manners Street, which has been leased for a term of 13 years from the owner, Mr. Martin Kennedy, by Messrs. C. Macmahon and M. J. Donnelly. The lessees by the time they have done with it intend to make it as new and bright as money and' brains can and have let a contract to Messrs. \V. JI. Edwards and Son to reconstruct the whole of tho interior. Tho old floor has been taken up, and is to be -replaced with a new raked floor, which will assure the occupant of every Mat a clear view of the «creon. The eastern gallery is being removed altogether, and the western gallery (entrance to which will be obtained from Herbert Street) is being altered and strengthened materially. The Wunderlieh Company is supplying an artistically-do-signed stamped steel frame for the picture screen which is to mcasuro 28ft. by ogft., and is also to line tho Manners Street entrance with stamped steel. A cellar is being excavated at the back of the hall for the accommodation of the motor and generator, which will then bo below ground and yet directly under the machine which will l>c worked from the gallery. As practically tlio whole, back of (lie littlo theatre will open nut into Herbert Street, and in addition there is tho six foot exit to Manners Street, there will be aniplo means to empty the hall in minimum time. The theatre, which is to bo handsomely decorated, will bo provided with tip-up chairs throughout. Mr. C. Macmahon hopes to oiion his continuous picturo show (day.and night) in tho New Theatre early next month. All the electrical fitting" is being executed by Messrs. Cederhdm and Tolley.
