KARORI AFFAIRS.
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The Karori Borough Council met last evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr C. 1. Dasent), and Councillors Cathie, Walmsley, Hildreth, Standen, Raine, Burn, and Welling. Correspondence was received on the subject of the 10 per cent, addition, to overdue rates, and in pointing out to the council why the applications of the writers for a remission of 10 per cent, fines imposed upon them in respect, of their overdue rates should not be granted, the Mayor observed that there was really no excuse for those who.failed'to pay their rates within the period extended to them. They had six months wherein to pay, arid if,,they nee;lecte,d,-.to do so, it was ■ perfectly reasonable"that some penalty should be imposed. The council agreed. A letter was received from Messrs. Richardson, Blair, and M'Cabe, in which it was'stated that recent floods in Australia had delayed the shipment of hardwood sleepers for the borough tramways. The Mayor stated that at the rate the sleepers were coming to hand it would bo impossible to commenco the laying of them till the end of the present month.
