HYPNOTISED BULL-DOG.
Paris is 'asking if association with the high Olympian minds of poets can have its effect on the lower animals. This question has been raised by a serious report of Professor Hachet-Souplet, the Director of the Institute of Zoological Psychology, on the strange case of a bull terrier, a pet of Mdme. Edmond Kostand, the wife of the famous poet and author of "Chantecler." Mdme. Rostand also is a poetess of national re--putatign. . .As; ilosemonde Gerard (her maiden' name) she has written several volumes of verse, and some of her poems have had wide popularity. Their'son, Maurice, not yet of age, is a> poet; too. Ho published this year a book of verses, and is a frequent contributor to periodicals. In their poetic atmosphere lived Clemencette, a white bull terrier, greatly cherished by her mistress. . It was not to be supposed that Clemencette would remain an ordinary dog, but her mental development has proceeded in a way which has resulted in Mdme. Rostand sending her for treatment to Professor Hachet-Souplet. Clemencette .is a victim of auto-hypnosis—that is to say, she goes'into hypnotic trances of her own accord. Her mind is so sensitive she is unlike any other dog. In his report the professor gives example of self-hypnosis which are so rare in dogs that Alex Francken Gueiion and other experimenters who have studied the question exhaustively have never recorded a similar case. Clemencette will bark at and bite the heels of a stranger, particularly one who is not .fashionably dressed. She will play after the manner of others of her race, but if a sudden noise is heard Clemencette immediately becomes rigid and lies in a trance for an indefinite period like a woman suffering with a form of hysteria. Professor Hachet-Souplet has tried several experiments. If he places Clemencette before two revolving balls, such as Charcot used to hypnotiso his patients, she is immediately fascinated, and remains inert, watching the balls for hours at a time. If a.line of chalk is drawn on the floor, and Clemencette is "placed with her nose at'one end, she cannot move. Other experiments have proved that she is a hypnotic subject, exactly as some human beings arc. No remedy has been suggested, but Professor Hachet-Souplet says that the strange case opens a new vista for"the study of animals.

Whether women teachers should resign their positions at school on marriage was the topic of discussion recently in London by the Fabian Education Group. Mr. A. K. Williams said that to exclude married women would mean that to a largo extent the training of the young would be in tho hands of inexperienced teachers. Miss Grant could not believe that woman's strength was equal to the double duties of maternity and the teaching of children. Another speaker said they did not want the men and women of the country to be trained entirely by spinsters.
