4 THE FATHER OF WAMATE. (By Tckxraph.-Presa Association.) Waimate, March 13. There died here on Sunday afternoon Sir. John Manchester, at the age of 77. He w,as well known as .senior partner of tho firm of Manchester Bics. and Goldsmith, established in 1803. Ho was also Waimato's most prominent citizen, and was connected with local bodies tor nearly 50 years. Ho was the first Mayor of (ho town in 1879, and then held office from lflOl to l!)0S. On retiring from the position he was presented with a piceo of plate and a handsome testimonial by tho citizens. He the originator of the Wesleyan Methodist Church ■ insurance scheme. Ho had been in failing health for some time. He was a most useful business man in the borough and county for ■> long period, and his counsel will be greatly missed.
