Nash, occupied the chair, and Mr. D.' Buick, M.P. for Palmerston, .was also among- the audience. _Mr. Malcoini remarked., inter alia, that,. Imperial...federation embraced Imperialdefence, preferential'-frade, administration aiid'' pni?d<sfoiii, Imperial judiciary, Civil Servioe, shipping and navigation, migration within" the Empire. o£ coloured races, naturalisation, Imperial mail and cable, services, copyright and patents, trusts, .corporations, weights and measures, and currency. •, Ho considered that tho first step towards consolidation must come from 'the colonies. The following resolution' was"- carried:— "That, .in tho opinion ~qf .this meeting, the ; closest ■ possible union of tho various portions of tho Empire is the greatest problem before statesmen of to-day." A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Malcolm at the conclusion of his address.

A meeting, of ' carpenters',and joiners was held at the Oddfellows' Hall last night, and was addressed by Mr. Ivor Hazell, who has been sent here by the Wellington Carpenters' and Joiners' Union to organise the workers in the Manawatu. Mr. Hazell has been commissioned to spend • three months in the district. The subject of the address was "Th 9 Workers' Only Hope." Mr. Hazell is endeavouring to revive the local union, which had practically ceased to exist.

Out of nine applicants; Mr. W. J. Conian has been appointed overseer to tho Manawatu Drainago Board.

The Palmerston Technical School cadets aro being taught Swedish gymnastic drill. Several new members lately joined tho corps, which is now becoming very strong and efficient.

The local branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union has decided to join with tho No-License League in working up the cause at the next election. '

The members of the Racing Commission passed through Palmerston yesterday on their way to inspect the courses in the Forty-Mile Bush and Wairarapa. They have been up as far as Auckland, and havo inspected all the courses, in that province.

Tennis teams from tho Dannevirko High School visit Palmerston on Saturday (March 11), aud play teams from the local High School on the latter's courts.

"Whereas," states the Minister for Labour in a Gazette notice, "a .requisi. tion, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in tho Borough of Palmerston North, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all shops excepting thoso trading exclusively as bakers, chemists, confcctioners, newsagents, fruiterers, dairy produco sellers, refreshment-room keepers, or fishmongers in tho borough <'iall bo closed in the' evening of working days as follows:—Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, at G p.m.; Wednesdays, at 1 p.m.; Saturdays, at 9.15 p.m.; from December 20 to 30 (inclusive), at 9 p.m. (holidays excepted); Thursday and Friday of Spring Show, at 9 p.m.: And whereas the Palmerslon North Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the shops within tho Borough of Palmerston North, I do hereby direct that from and after March 13, 1911, all shops excepting those hereinbefore specified, shall bo closed in accordance with such requisition." The annual picnic of the Stoney Creek School was held at the Ashluirst Domain to-day in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance of children and parents. The chairman of tho School Committee (Mr. 11.
