DR. JOWETT.
INVITATION TO NEW YORK ACCEPTED. Some days before the announcement was made that Dr. Jcwett, of Birmingham, had decided to go to New York, the London "Christian World" wrote:— "We hear that another invitation is to be given to Dr. Jowett from Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York, and that the officials aro not without hope that 110 may accept it. Apparently there, aro only_ two preachers ill the world who can till this great and beautiful church—one is at Westminster and the other at Carr's Lane. There is no doubt that Dr. Jowett's ministry would make an immense impression 011 New York, and it is well known that when lie. was invited before he war, greatly attracted by the unique opportunity which' is presented by the Fifth Avenue Church. Only at the very last moment did he decide to decline the invitation. On that occasion bis English friends had much to say 011 the subject, and they will bo prepared at any time lo do their utmost to keep Dr. Jowett 011 this sjde. But he has been at Carr's Lano since 1895, and it would not be surprising if sixteen years of strenuous work have left liini a littlo weary. Tho salary offered at Fifth Avenue is about £3500 a year, with a manse which is worth £1000 a year. But although this salary seems high according to English ideas', it is by 110 means excessive considering the high cost of living in Now York." Later information shows that the salary which Dr. Jowett is to receive as pastor of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church is, by his own stipulation, to be the equivalent only to his present stipend. The following resolution has been passed by tho deacons of Carr's Lane Church, Birmingham: — "Tho members of the church and congregation of Carr's Lano profoundly regret Dr. Jowett's sevoranco from the great work which he has so successfully carried 011 as their pastor during tho past fifteen and a half years; but having heard the statement which he has now made, they desire to assure him that the call which, lie has onco again received from, .the. Fifth Avenue Church, New York, is one in which they also recognise tho voice of God. They therefore commend him in all tenderness and Christian sympathy to their brethren across the sea, and assure him that they will follow him and support him in his new ministry with their constant prayers.
