KNIGHT OF THE GARTER REPAIRS. CONTRACT LET FOR £13,000. (By Telegraph—Press A ssociattcn.l Duncdin, March 8. It has been decided that the steamer Knight of the Garter, which sustained extensive damage as a Tcsult of grounding on tho rocks whilst entering Bluff Harbour on February 17, will be permanently repaired here. The accepted tender, that of Stevenson and Cook, is said to be about £13,C00, which, with dock and harbour charges, will probably bring the total cost of repairs to the vessel up to the neighbourhood of <€16,000. The work is to bo completed in two months. PAPAROA LEAVES HOME. The New Zealand Shipping Co.'s Gtenmcr Paparoa left Home for Auckland, Wellington, and Lyttelton on March 6. She is due here about April 22. KENT ARRIVES AT SYDNEY. Late last night the local agents? for the F.-H.-S. Line received word that the steamer Kent had arrived at Sydney from Liverpool. She i(3 cxpected to clear the New South Wales port 011 Sunday for Wellington, via Auckland, and is due here about March 24, KIA OR A LEAVES CAPE TOWN. Cable advice received by the local agents of the Shaw. Savill and Albion Company rtates that the Kia Ora, which left London for Wellington, via Auckland, on February 11, continued her voyage from Cape Town on Monday evening, March 6. The vessel is due here about March 25.
A BIG PItOPOSAIj. A telegram from Wellington appearing in the "llawkc's Bay Herald" states that proposals arc bciup: considered for a fast steam service between Wellington and Sydney. It is understood that 22-knot boats have been suggested. and that leadinn members of both the New Zealand and federal Governments are inclined to look favourably upon such a service, which would brine New Zealand within 21 days' steam of the greater population of Australia. Such a servico would of course have to be subsidised probably by both New Zealand and the Commonwealth,

MAITAI LEAVES FOR 'FRISCO. Almost down to her Plimsoll mark, looking particularly neat in appearance, the Union Company's R.M.S. Maitai left the Queen's Wharf. Wellington, on her long run to San Francisco, via way ports, at 3.20 p.m. yesterday. The vessel takes a large cjuantity of cargo from this end, Hie prineapil lines being 3CO boxes of butler, 1300 crates of onions, and 20 parrels general for llarotomza. At Auckland she takes in another 2000 crates of onion?, besides a quantity of general cargo. I The vessel, which is due to arrive at the I American port on March 31. has 70 pasf.engers booked from Wellington. The list has been already published. ARRIVAL OF THE MARAMA. Good time was put up by tho Marama on the run from Sydney to Wellington this trip. The vessel left the New South Wales port at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday last, and dropped anchor in the stream at 5.45 a.m. yesterday, thus taking 77} hours to do the trip. Fine weather was experienced all the way. CHANGE OF STEAMERS , Certain changes have already been announced in regard to the Sail Francisco scrvicc in conscqucncc of the Aorangie mishap. Further changes have to bo made to keep up the running to time-table dates. To relievo the Aorangi, t the Manuka (as previously statcd)will withdraw from the intercolonial service on arrival at Dunedin on Saturday, March 25. She will leave Wellington on Wednesday, April 5, and Auckland on Saturday, April 8, for ban Francisco, via Rarotonga and Papeete, inc Mokoia, due at Dunedin on Thursday, March 16, will withdraw from the DunedinAuckland service, and will leave the former port on Sunday, March 26, for Bluff, Hobart, and Melbourne. She thus replaces tho Manuka, and will continue in that run in the meantime. The Hauroto will leave Dunedin on Friday, March 17, for Auckland, via Kaet Coast ports, in place of the Mokoia, and continue w that running until the various services are readjusted. A Press Association message from Auckland, rcccivcd yesterday, states that the Wellington portion of the Talnnc's cargo, from the islands, consists of 318 cases of bananas, and 2250 cases of oranges. It was stated yesterday that the Harbour Boar'd's dredge would follow me Kotuku on the slip. Sincc then, however, it has been foutiu that the dredge will not bo ready for tho slip for somq time yet. Cable advice, rcccivcd at Wellington, announces the arrival at London of Mr. G. H. Scales's chartered steamer Clan Chisholm, from Wellington.. Koromiko, turret steamer, is to leave Westport for Wellington to-morrow. She will bo followed by tho Komata. on Saturday. Either to-night or early to-morrow morn* ing tho Maoriland Steamship Company's steamer Emiurdalo should show up from Newcastle. Upon completing part discharge of her cargo of coal she will proceed to Napier, probably sailing 011 Saturday.
Mr. R. Struthers joined the Gertie as second engineer yesterday, taking tho place of Mr. D. W. S. Ross. Dr. C. 11. Schumacher has been appointed surgeon on board R.M.S. Maitai, thus relieving Dr. M. Pcrcival, who is a passenger by the vessel as far as Papeete. It is understood that Captain Crawford, now acting vice Captain Lambert, of tne Arahura, will relieve Captain Aiawell, of the Maori, during tho latter's holiday term. At 2.45 p.m. yesterday the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's steamer Waiwcra arrived at Wellington from Gisbornc. Tho vessel completes loading at this port, and in scheduled to leave for London on March .UThe Blenheim resumed running in tho Wellington-Blenheim service yesterday. Tho Waihi, which has been relieving her, left at *1.20 p.m. for Terakohe, where sho relieves the steamer Lady Barkley. The Corinna, which left Wellington last night for Timaru, Dunedin, and Oamarn, transhipped 9750 boxes of butter, and 50 crates of ehccsc from Onchunga to the Tongariro for tho Homo market. Yesterday the Tyeer Line's steamer Whakarua -was duo at Melbourne from London. The vessel is en route to Wellington, and is expected here about April 5. Mr. R. Wilson,- mate of the steamer Waihi, left the vessel at Wellington yesterday. On Saturday last, tho Union Company's steamer Waitcmata arrived at Bombay from Hobart. After discharging her cargo of sleepers, she will go to Calcutta, and will leave there about the first week in April for New Zealand ports. At 5 p.m. to-day the Mangapapa. leaves Wellington for Westport and Karamea. All claims and accounts against tho steamer Strathendrick must be rendered in triplicate to the Vacuum Oil Company before noon to-day. Shore folks, as well as seafarers, arc expressing admiration at tho shapely modelling of the American keel schooner Lyman D. Foster, at present in dock at Port Chalmers for cleaning and painting. She is evidence that the building of wooden ships is not a forgotten art. At 9.10 o'clock last night a sailing vessel passed Wellington Heads bound west. Upon completion of tho discharge of her cargo of timber from Grcymouth at Sydney and Melbourne, the Union Company's steamer Waipori will take in produce at the last-named port, ai well as at Geelong, for New Zealand ports.
In the list of latest charters it is stated that the Clan Line steamer Cla:l Ross is to bring a load of iarrah froru Bnnbury to Now Zealand, and, upon completion of discharge, will load general cargo at various ports for London. The barques Hazel Craig and liouisa Craig are under chartcr. The former is 1o take coal from Newcastle to h'aipara, and the latter timber from h'aipara. to Sydney.
