ON THE MOUNDS.

A "good - many riflemen' who finished'well in the two-range Nelson Match were shut out of. tho prize list-on account of the disasters .which, befell them in Saturday's sou.';: wester;; Privato George, of the-Bluff. Guardsi put on a. 10-shot possible at 800 yards, a brilliant "shoot," but was hopelessly out of it with his score of 35.at 500 yams on Saturday. lieut. Bolton,'a Wellington ' PosV and Telegraph marksman, made 19, but a 33 at 500 yards was. not enough to get him into tho list. Richarilsoii,. of GTeymouth, with 49, only mado 31 on Saturday; Sharland, of Stoke 619), mado 27; Guiney, of Christohureh (49), 37. In fact, the weather conditions, generally speaking, were so good that capable marksmen, with few exceptions, were able to finish with respectable scores. Among-the exceptions might be mentioned, as illustrative of the jarying fortunes of the mounds. 'Privato 'Osborne, of Feilding, made 47 at-500 yards on Saturday, an excellent effort, considering the atrocious character of the weather, but yesterday, under conditions which only a confirmed misanthrope could cavil at. lie mado 37 only. Pcarce,- of' Ohakea, with a fine .score of-48 at 500 -yards in the sou'easter, came back with 38 at 800 yards. • Ksher, of Stoke, fared worse. With 4S at 500 yards, ho mado a disappointing 29 .at 800 yards. Although the conditions were as perfect ns possible, a striking instance of tho advantage to gained by closely watching the lulls in the wind was noted. Lieut.- Duncan, -who put on tho possible (50) at SOO yards in the Nelson match,, got his shots away in rapid succession, and reaped the full advantage of tho lull. Another expert shot who was down at the same time as Lieut. Duncan had only fired four shots when tho latter had completed his "shoot." A change for the worso came, over the .scene as soon as Lieut. Duncan rose, and the man who lingered over.his shot had'"a very lad Tim" with his final six shots. In the appended prize-lists' the details of the scores made by. tho prize-winners are fully set out. Captain W. S. King at Work. Sis centrals, two bulls, two inncrs.

Kelson Match, 800 yards, 10, shots. ; . 54c«cccciS—IS. With little or no wind blowing, Captain King sent his first, shot dead in, and put on a."bull." The next shot was a Tour, but, tho wind holding off, the following shots' up to ths eighth were centrals. A four was recorded With the ninth shot,-and the operator shifted to three .dogroes'left'for his final draw, and again found tho bull. Champion's Good Shoot, ' Rifleman Ilalliday's Target. Nelson Match, SOOyds.; ten shots.

515ccccccc—19. Commencing with 15 degrees right,' the first shot (sighter) loosened by Rifleman Halliday found the inner at C o clock, and the next reached the bull's-eye low down. The wind eased on the third shot, and let it out to the inner at i o clock, after which a steady slant of wind allowed, by quick shooting, of a succession of centrals.' This lasted until the ninth shot, when a bad (deration shot occurred at eleven o'clock. This corrected, saw ft centra lodged right in the middle of the target for the tenth. This, said Rifleman Halliday, after tho shoot, was the only steady Wt'nf wind he .had had since the meeting opened and onlv (|tiiolc shnoting allowed of the. score being made, as ti change occurred immediately afterwards.
