INNOCENT SUFFERERS.

THE WIVES OF PRISONERS. Mr. Tj. Arnold, J.P., visiting justice to the local prison, spoke at the weekly meeting of -the Wellington Brotherhood yesterday afternoon on "Prisoners'. Wives and Children." Ha told several piteous stories of suffering brought upon the innocent by the faults of others. A wifo was- often compelled to seek employment because of a' husband's imprisonment, hut if an employer was acquainted w'ith the reason of her trouble she was often discharged. The children wero pointed to and shunned by- society. One case that came under his notice was that of a woman and child who died of starvation whilst the husband was in Wellington Gaol. Mr. Arnold also spoke of a girl who was rejected by her relatives because of a misfortune, and she was afterwards committed to a prison for three months for failure to support her child. The chairman (Mr. \V. Bedford) said he considered it a shame that the Government should have allowed such a sentence to stand.

Miss Lulu Arnold gave a recitation. There was a large attendance. Next Sunday the Brotherhood will meet with the Wellington South Brotherhood at Newtown Library, where the Rev. E. O. Blamires will give an address.'
