GREYMOUTH TENNIS CLUB. 'from Our Special Correspondent.! The match between the A teams of the Greymouth and Hokitika Tennis Clubs was played at Hokitika 011 Saturday last, under the most favourable conditions. Throughout the day a large number of supporters of both teams was present, and several exciting contests took place. The'Hokitika Ladies' Committee provided refreshments. Tile results of the day's play were as follow, tho names of tho Greymouth players being placed first:— Ladies' Singles: Sirs. Lewis 4, Mrs. Williams 6; Miss 0. Stanford 4, Miss L. Miss Alice Power, who was killed by a boulder that crashed into a railway carriage near Paekakariki, was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Power, of tho South Beach, near Greymouth. The news of her death was received with great regret here, where slio was highly respected". About threo weeks ago, Miss Power, who was employed in the dressmaking department of Messrs. Thomas and M'Beath's drapery establishment, left tho coast on tho holiday trip that has ended so tragically.

TOBACCO PIPE IN A MINE, . At the Greymouth Magistrate's Court on Monday, before Mr. Crooke, S.M., H. G. Austin pleaded guilty to the charge of carrying (on January 11) a tobacco pipe into a portion of the Paparoa coal mine, ill which only safety lamps were allowed to be used. Mr. Guinness informed the court that, as tho offence had been admitted, the company would not press for a heavy penalty. Tho Magistrate, after having expressed his astonishment at the action of accusedi imposed a fine of 10s. and costs. ' • FRESH FOOD AND ICE CO. At tho last meeting of the directors, of the Greymouth Fresh food and Ice Co., it was shown that tile.. results' of tho season's operations had so far proved highly satisfactory. Dairy suppliers had 'received on an average no loss than £33 per day, Sundays included, during the past month, and tho whole output had been eagerly purchased locally. During the past season one supplier was paid at tho rate of. £02 per month for milk, so that dairyfarming promises to become n profitable occupation on the West Coast. PORT AFFAIRS. It is understood that, as a result of a conference between tho. members of the Greymouth Harbour Board and Mr. Thomas Ronayne, general manager of New Zealand Railways, a new hydraulic crane for use on'the Greymouth Wharf will bo forthwith manufactured in tho Dominion, and also that the Government will bo urged to impose a tax of a penny per hundred superficial feet oil all timber passing over the wharf. The sawmillers liavo entered a vigorous protest agafnst this proposal. HON. D. BUDDO'S VISIT. The Hon. D. Buddo, Minister for Internal Affairs and of Public Health, arrived in Greymouth by tho Otira express last Tuesday evening. He was accompanied by Mrs. Buddo and daughter,, and also by his private secretary, Mr. J. W. Black. The Minister was met at tho railway station by the Mayor, who welcomed him to tho West 1 C'oast, and, after Mr. Buddo had formally replied, tho party drove to Rovington's Hotel. Next morning tho Minister opened the Westlaud A. and P. show at Hokitika, whence ho proceeded to Rcefton, where ho opened the showthat was held on Friday.

It is probable that Mr. Buddo will attend the Fire Brigade Demonstration to l)o held at Hokitika next week, but should ho bo unable to bo present his place may. be taken by tho Hon. J. Carroll.
