HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho usual meeting of the Hutt Borough Council was held last night. There were present-.—The Mayor (Sir. E. P. Bunny), and Councillors Anson, lloots, Baldwin, Ivempthorn, Clere, Macaskill, Hawthorn, and ;Pearce. The Public Health Department advised having made an inspection of a fowlrun, which "had been- previously quoted as an alleged nuisance- to a neighbour, and expressed tho opinion that no further action should be taken.
Councillor Clere: "There seems to be a certain amount of spite in this affair, .and I would like the neighbours to liavo some substantial justice." It was moved and decided that a copy of the Health Department's letter be sent to the complainant. It was also decided to ascertain if tho fowlhouse had been built according to tho borough by-laws and if the owner had obtained a permit for tho erection of tho same.
A provisional approval of the £10,000 loan for the council's drainago construction works was received, from tho State Guaranteed Advances Oflice.
In reference to extras on Mr. Young's contract, Messrs. M'Grath and Willis wrote stating that they were prepared, on behalf of their client, to accept tho sum of £55 in full' settlement. The balanco now payable 1 on contract and extras was £572. 14s; 9d.; and the amount of deposit £20. It was decidcd to pay this amount. Tho Commissioner for Crown Lands intimated that, whilst there would be no objection for the taking of part of Section 87 for tho widening of Waterloo Road, tho Furcliasc Fund would have to bo compensated at the rate of £11.3 13s. <ld. per acre for tho small fraction required, and tho provisions of The Public Works Act would have to bo observed in "taking it. It was decided that this condition bo not accepted. Messrs. 0. and R. Beere, writing ro water for Fitzherbert Street East, on behalf of Mr. Keene, requested that tho council should lay a water pipe to servo this estate. Referred to the Works Committee. Messrs. Dwau Bros, complained that a septic tafik in Wakefield Street was causing a smell which affected their tenants. The complaint was received, and it was dccided to reply that there was practically no smell originating from the septic tank. The engineer reported that he had made a house-to-house inquiry in Central Terrace, Alicetown, asking the occupants whether (a) they had suffered inconvenienco at any time from smells arising from tho septic tank, and (b) if they had heard of anyone else complaining. Of eleven people interviewed only two. had stated that they had experienced bad smells, or hail heard others complain, and they were not quite sure if it was tho septic tank. Tho Petono Technical School Board wrote advising tho council that it was entitled to three representatives, and asked to bo furnished with the names. Councillors Baldwin, Hayes, and Roots were appointed. Messrs. E. AY. Mills and Co. wrote, asking 1 to bo supplied with one of tho mower plates recently, purchased-by tho council.—Granted. Tho Waiwetu Cricket Club forwarded a cheque for £10, 'in payment of rent for the current season. ' Tho Library Association of New Zealand forwarded n circular in reference to the objects and aims of the association. —Received. Dr. Hcctor, writing in connection v.-ith bis drain, acknowledged receipt of the council's letter of February 25, in reference to a drain in Waterloo Road, and stated that he was anxious to have this matter put through as soon as possible, and therefore offered to pay half the cost of tho work ■ through his property if tho council" would allow the engineer to pipe and fill in the portion of the drain. Councillor Maeaskill said that the offer was a satisfactory one, and moved that the request be given effect to.—Engineer and Works Committee to report.
The Hutt- Fire Brigado was granted permission to erect and use a shooting gallery in connection with tlieir bazaar now being held. The brigade also forwarded an application from" a ratepayer of Eastbourne, requesting the brigado to take tho manual engine to Kona Bay to givo a practical demonstration. Permission was granted, and it was also decided to lend a horse for tho occasion.
The engineer submitted a lengthy report. '
