Kilbride, Nationalist member for Kildare, inquired in the House of Commons as to the action of Mr. Ilaldane, Secretary for War, in giving the Swift Meat Company, of Chicago, a contract for frozen meat for (lie Cm'ragli camp while the United States Government was fighting the Beef Trust, as an unfair and illegal combination. Mr. Ilaldane, in replying, said the points mentioned would be considered in connection with Iho next contracts. He did not consider it necessary to disturb the contract expiring iu May. Mr. J. O'Connor (Nationalist) asked if tho Commonwealth was not combating the Beef Trust, and whether it was proper for a Free-trade Government to encourage a trust whoso profits were founded on Protection. (Opposition cheers.) Mr. Haldane replied that he did not think the protective tariff bad much to do with tho matter, and added, "As a Froe-trado Government we,get the best article possible at tho most moderate price." AUSTRALIAN ACTIVITY ADMIRED. By Telegraph—Press Association—OopyrtelitLondon, February 28. The "Daily Telegraph's" New York correspondent states that the Commonwealth's determination to discourage tho American Meat Trust in Australia is viewed with envious admiration by Americans, who are powerless in tho hands of the Trust.
