ON THE MOUNDS.
AT PAPAWAI. WAIRARAPA RIFLE MEETING. FEATURES AND SCORES. (By Telegraph-Special Reporter.) Greytown, February 23. ..The nin3tceifh. annual prize meeting of the' Wairanp-i Rifle Association was opened at Papavai range, Greytown, this morning under moft favourable auspices. The weather was fine, and the number of competitors attending tho ineeiing (103}. constitutes a. reecrd for tho Wairarapa district championship contest. Last year S3 competitors faced the taigets. Owing to the fact that the Papawai meeting immediately precedes the New Zealand championship meeting at Trcntham (only a day intervening) the Greytown Range attracts a considerable number of competitors from outride districts. The I'apawai Range is sufficiently tricky to afford competitors, en. route to tha Treutham meeting, excellent opportunities for a useful preliminary. ■ ■ ■ ■ Among visiting riflemen are G. Hyde and E. J.- King, of Opaki, Lieut. Irvine and Sergt. Frank, of Nelson, Kergt. James (Napier), W. N. Maselield (Sounds Rifle Club), and H. Marshall (Knrori Rifle Club). The executive committee of the association has laid itself out to make the meeting as attractive as possible, and, with that end in view, have increased the prize money for each event, and, at the snino time" have reduced the entrance fees. There has ajfo been added to the programme an optional aggregate match, the results of which will be computed from the scores at 500, 600, and 800 yards, recorded in the first four matches of the championship serif?. This feature has received very favourable comment on the mounds.
Licut.-Colonel R. W. Tate, Captain Jury, nnd Messrs. B. Burch, A. Matthews, H. Walden, and J. 0. Bidwill are acting as range officers, ,Mr. A. L. Webster is secretiiry, and statistical officer.
• lii tlie past visitors to the have cxperwicpii some di<f.culty in seemms hotel accommodation. This year the committee has provided a mmber of t«i(s on' tbc range —a convenience which has been taken advantage of by- about 50 of the competitors.
Shooting commenced in a somewhat changeable light, but with a fairly steady wind, repairing about three or four degrees deflection. Tho C'arterton match — a soven-sliqt match at 500 and GOO yards, and the AV.F C.A. and Nursery matches,, each 10 shots !at 500 yards—were taken first, the whole three being fired simultaneously. At tin. , 51)0 yards range Mawley, of Opaki, and Marenzi, of Eketahuna, scored ten shot "possibles," while, Frank, of Nelson, Mirenzi, 'of Eketahuua, ll'Lean (Thames), .and Batt (Taihape) rattled in seven-shot possibles:" Excellent shootin? .was also done by M'lntbsh'-and' Hyde (Opaki), • Dagg (Alf'redtou), G. W. ypiinell (Te Wharau), and F. G. Franklin (Weber), who each got within one point of 'a ten-shot "possible." Sergeant James, of Napier, and Rifleman Wakely (Fear therston) and Henderson.'(Sounds) put on Si's at COO yards in the Carterfon Match. During this stage, of the .shooting the wind became erratic, and there Was a Reneral "muck up" along the line, no "possibles" being registered. The winner of the Carlerton Match turned lip in Sergeant James, of Napier, with 68 points. Sergeant Frank (Nelson) arid Trooner Marenzi (Eketahuna) registered 'equal points, but hart to fall back to second and third nlaces on tho "count back."
•The Masterton Match—a seven-shot competition at GOO nnd 700 yards—witnessed- a wholesale collnnse right along the line. One man, Riflemjn R. Stewart (Weber) made the "possible" (33 points) at 600 ynrds, -while at the same range Sergeant Plimmer (D Battery) and Rifleman Norman Wood (Christehurch) nut on 31 each. The rest fell away to all" manner of .."medium" scores. At the 700 yards range the best scorn was 33, registered bv Lieut. Irvine (Nelson), Sertjt. Morrison (Thames), and A. Hyrto (Okawa). The honours of the Mastevton Match fell to Sergt. Plimmer, of D Battery, whose aggregate was 63. W. Old(ield, a promising tyro from Bulls, came second with Gi noints. First place in" the W.F.C.A. Match-a trophy contest at 500 yards, ten shotswas awarded to Rifleman Mawley (Opaki), tlio runner-up being Trooper Mareuzi (Ekchliiina). Both of these tied with a "possiblo" of 50, but Mawley won by one point. The shoot off :n the Nursery Match was won bv Rifleman W. OMfield. of nulls, with ■IS points, the runncr-np being Rilleman W.
