ALLEGED ILLEGAL PAYMENTS.
'AN ASHBURTON CASE. (By Tclccraph—Press Association.) Ashburton, February 24. Tho caso of .Henry. Davis, Mayor of Ashburton, versus Hugo Friedlandor, chairman of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, alleging tho receipt of allegedly illegal payments, came before tho magistrate to-day, when the defendant applied for an adjournment till March 10.
Plaintiff objected on the ground that tho defendant's motive in asking for such adjournment was to hold a spccial meeting of tho Hospital Board and got his actions whitewashed prior to tho caso boiug heard. Notico for such a meeting had already been issued. " Tho magistrato stated that no resolution could whitewash any wrong-doing of which Friedlander might bo guilty. Any discussion at a meeting of a public body would be highly indecent and most improper. Ho granted an adjournment only on condition that tho matter would not bo discussed by tho Hospital Board. Tho solicitor gavo tho necessary undertaking, and tho caso will accordingly be heard on March 10.
