AN EVENT IN SAVAGEDOM.
PRESENTATION TO THE SECRETARY. The peaceful glades of Willis Street, to be precise, the sylvan solitudes of /the Grand Hotel roof garden, were last afternoon invaded by those guileless children of Nature, the Wellington Savage Club. It appears that the, popular Savage secretary, who is otherwise known in cmlised circles as Mr. James Dykes,'not long ago became the' happy father, of a budding brave. A more or less solemn assembly of the . tribe ■ was accordingly held to give expression to their feelings about the matter. Appropriately to the importance of the occasion, the spokesman was the great Savage Chief. Col. R. J. Collins, who, on behalf of the hapu, handed to the proud sire a landsome silver salver, suitably inscribed, in commemoration of the event' In doinz so the colonel : referred to the invaluable "services Tendered to the tribe. by Mr: Dykes, and - expressed the hope that the H>l»tl(ig.lJ(lplibSe''ffo(lld!foHoff. , 'in the footsleps«W*nis «celleHt f parent. The.head of the potential warrior .was. next duly moistened in the peculiar, .manner \vhich prevails among savage tribes. Savage Dykes then harangued the assembled braves, and stated his opinion that, if vocal power, and conversational , ability were any criterion, the' youthful scion bid fair to become a more brilliant"Savage than his father, handicapped by excessive modesty, could ever hope to be. ' ■ . • • • Before the korero closed Savage Herd, who was present v:ith scalps in his belt, was duly honoured for his successful raid in command of the Wellington Garrison Band; while Savage Parkes, who is about to start on,.the warnath ; in search of yet greater fame and fortune, was accorded a hearty farewell. Savage Arnold -Izard; a great medicine man of the hapu, was spokesman :in the latter event. ■ ,
