Inquiries' were instituted by the Newton police, but tho mystery could not be solved until Mrs. Porteous was well enough to be interviewed.' " Then it- was learned that she hnd placed the box containing the money on tho verandah roof, which was tho scene of the'torriblo tragedy that followed, but had hot seen either box or money since. Further, examination was. made, and it was ascertained that the heat of. the'iron during tho fire was so great that the coin had melted. ■ What is believed to be a mixture of melted gold and silver has been recovered, and is now in the hands of the police.
