Association.! -'• .'-.'■■ • Auckland, February 20.Something of a mystery existed: in' connection .-with tho disappearance of a sum of money, between JD2O and £56, from Mrs. PorteousV bedroom after tho T-Oiisonby Road fire. .This money had boon'placed by .Mrs. Porteous under her bed, and was.to havp been usedifor pay-' ing the painters w-ho were just completing the renovation of tho shon. After tho fire search was made, ami Though some,.£ls was recovered in other rooms,; together with a quantity of jewellery, no trace could bo found of Mrs. rortoous's box or the money it contained. Inquiries' were instituted by the Newton police, but tho mystery could not be solved until Mrs. Porteous was well enough to be interviewed.' " Then it- was learned that she hnd placed the box containing the money on tho verandah roof, which was tho scene of the'torriblo tragedy that followed, but had hot seen either box or money since. Further, examination was. made, and it was ascertained that the heat of. the'iron during tho fire was so great that the coin had melted. ■ What is believed to be a mixture of melted gold and silver has been recovered, and is now in the hands of the police.
