SECONDARY INSTRUCTION.
NEW CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE. Tho. following regulations relating to certificates of secondary instruction are published.by tho Education Department: To pupils taking n secondary school course who, after having gained a certificate of. proficiency; or after having passed tho special examination for junior free places, nave satisfactorily .completed at a secondary school or its equivalent a two years' course of secondary instruction, certificates of tho satisfactory completion of such a courso shall be issued. ■ Subject to similar conditions fjoveruing the tenure o{ junior and senior freo places.in secondary schools, ' certificates, to b» termed "Leaving Certificates of the Lower Grade," or, briefly, "Lower Leaving Certificates," shall also bo issued to pupils who have satisfactorily completed a threo years' course of secondary instruction at ah approved school, being either a secondary school or its equivalent: Provided that tho standard of work ill tho classes in which the pupil is placed during the last year , of t|io course is at. least that of corresponding subjects in the examination for a teacher's certificate of Class D: .Provided further. Mliht the units of w'ork satisfactorily completed during the course shall bo not less than 56, and shall ineludo not less -'than 12 units in English, 8 .tunits. in. arithmetic (or 12 in mathematics, including arithmetic), and 8 units in science: ••
Leaving Certificates of tho richer Grade, or, briefly, Higher ■Leaving Certificate.', shall bo issued > to pupils who have satisfactorily completed 'at - such a school .a four years' courso-. of secondary .instruction:. Provided that tho standard of work in tho classes in which the pupil is placed during tho last year is nqt'lower than that of tho matriculation examination of tho University of New Zealand for the time being prcscrib-' cd: Provided further ,that the units of work satisfactorily completed- during tho course shall bo not less thnn 75, and shall include'not less than. 16 units in English, 16 \inits> in mathematics, 10 units in ono of, the languages Latin, Greek, French, German;; and'l2'talU in science. A unit of work-shall bo taken, in CTnsonsneo'wjth; tbo;,tteros qf tho Freo Placo Regulations, to denote-school classwork o£ one hour per week regularly throughout a school year. ; These certificates may bo obtained bv any candidates who fulfil,tho required conditions, whether they havo been holders of freo places or not.
