This month has been a busy ono for local signallers, and upwards of 50 men havo undergone, or are undergoing, examination by Lieutenant Hulbert. This branch of the service has considerably improved during,;the last:few. years. > A*t, ono timo it was considered sufficient for a man to be. able to send and receive groups of letters in • Morse and semaphore at tho rate of four to'six words a minute. Now, in order to qualify as a trained signaller, each man must send nnd receive service mes-agos on tho holiogrnph, lamp, and small flag, at the rate of eight words per minute, nnd a paragraph message in semaphore at tho rate of ten words per minute, in addition to which a thorough knowledge of signal station work nnd tho application''of signalling in the field are required. On completion of his cour.se, each signaller must undergo a theoretical examination. After completing the engineers' lamp tost?. Lieutenant Hulbort will examine the D. Battery signallers.
