Jn an interview,-ho stated that despite a considerable riso (luring the last decade tho prices of food in Montreal wero 30 per cent, below'those of New York. Beef, which was formerly 7d. a pound, now Is.; mutton, which used to bo Gd., is now Is.; butter, formerly lOd., is now Is, Bd. If the agreement wero ratified it would speedily raise Canadian prices to tho 'level it thoso of Now York, and tho Canadian wage-earner would suffer. It was probable that New Zealand mutton would finally bo imported, and the American Beef Trust would import Canadian livo stock, cornering beef on both sides of the line. . GROWTH OF BRITISH TRADE.
