ELECTION OF A BISHOP.

WELLINGTON SYNOD TO MEET. OS MARCH 8. The Anglican Synod of the diocese of Wellington will meet on March 8 for the election of a bishop in succession to Itishop Wallis, -who has resigned owing to failing health., It is probable. that ' the Synod will, after arranging preliminary matters, find it.necessary to adjourn in order to give time for making inquiries as to suitable persons-for the : high position to be filled, but as no one 'can tell for certain what ateion may be decided upon a fullattendance of. synodsmen is very desirable. At the recent meeting of the. Auckland Synod for/the election of a successor to Bishop Neligan, the synod considered in cariiera.the qualifications :of those whose, names were broujht forward, - taking a series of ballots until one man secured a majority of both clergy and laity," who vote Separately. Then in open synod the man , who : had obtained the requisite majorities (the Rev: J. P. Maud) was formally nominatedby one of the clergy, seconded by a lay member, and elected almost unanimous-' : ly.' Unfortunately; however, he did not accept, and the Auckland Syr.od will meet again next Tuesday, February 21; for an- • other election. Probably the Wellington Synod' will adopt a, somewhat .similar course of procedure to that followed in■."/ Auckland, bnt this is by no means certain. It 19 the duty of the Bishop's Com-. '■: missary (Archdeacon Fancouri), actiri? '■' ■, ; under instructions from the Primate, to •'". call the Synod, together and to preside! over its deliberations, but he votes merely as a member.of his own order. :■' Y;';-' Since the foundation of-the Anglican . diocese of Wellington there have been■■•.-,. three bishops,'namely:— '.'
