It has been decided by a number of citizens of : Wellington to entertain '• Sir. Joseph' Ward and tho Hon. Dr. , Findlay at a. banquet on March 1, two days before . their departure for England.. Dr.' Findlny announced when the committee previously fixed March 2 that he would bo unable to attend, but it is -understood that tho date now decided upon will bo suitable. Tho committee are endeavouring to make it, a.Dominion affair, and it is probable gentlemen will be present from various parts .of JCew Zealand. For that reason the speakers have not been decided unou, and there.is aUo some-un-certainty "in regard-to the place where the gathering'-will be held. The tickets will be sold at ,61 Is. each.' Mr. James Dykes is,the secretary of the committee. The Hon. Captain Boyle and Mrs. Boyle, who are on a visit to the Dominion, arrived in Auckland from-the south on Sunday, and leave- for England by tho Macedonia to-day. < Captain Boyle is, a son of Lord Glasgow, a former Governor of the Dominion. '
Tho Hon. It. W. Pennefather, K.C../of Perth, and ex-Attorney-General for Australia, arrived in Auckland by the Maheno from Sydney on Sunday. He has come to-New Zealand for the benefit of his health, and has proceeded to Eotorua. Mr. Percy Dawson, son of Mr. Stewart Dawson, of London, is at present on a visit to Wellington.
Mr. C. E. Russell, lecturer and publicist, left Wellington yesterday for Auckland, via the Wanganui River. Though Mr. Russell has travelled in most countries of the world, he is very enthusiastic about the claims of the Wanganui for scenic beauty. '.
The first saloon, passengers by the Corinthic, duo hero in a few days, are Mr. and Mrs J. B. Brown, who are booked to Auckland; and Meesrs. W. S. Dunreo and F. B. Deacon, who arc • passengers for Wellington. -.'■■•

Mr. D. A. Smith died at Palmerston North on Saturday of pneumonia.' He was Si years of age, and at one time took a prominent part, iu amateur theatricals.
