AN EMPEROR'S BIRTHDAY.
CELEBRATED IN WELLINGTON. At (ho Grand Hotol on Saturday evening the third birthday of the young Emperor of China,: Hsuan-Tung, was' celebrated by a dinner given by the Chinese Consul, Mr. Hwang. The function passed off most pleasantly and successfully. The Prime- Minister and Attorney-General, Mr. Justice Chapman, and a large body of Consular renresontatives of diilcrent countries were amongst those Present. During the evening Mr. Hwang made somo interesting observations concerning the respective hones nud nsnirations of tlio Eastern and Western faces, and voiced the hone.\of, a better understanding of eacn other us the surest means of overcoming eucli racial prejudices as might arise. .Sir Joseph Ward, in proposing tho health of Mr. Ewang, expressed tho hopo that the Chinese Government would permit him to continue to represent it in new, Zealand for many years to come, and he was sure the pleasant personal relations which existed ■ betwe?n Mr. Hwang and those with whom he came into contact in this country would grow still stronger.
