A GALLANT RESCUE.
PLUCKY ENGINEER'S NARROW ESCAPE. (By Teleeranh-Prcss Association.) Auckland, February 7. Two particularly gallant attempts a\ rescue of a. man from drowning took place at Waiti[iu liuy, Manukau Ileads, Yesterday, the seconil proving successful." X man named M'Leod, a resident of Oneliunga, fell off the rocks into deep water, striking a projection as ho did so. As he did not rise again, an engineer of the steamer I'utiki jumped to his rescue and with great difficulty was bringing him ashore when he himself sank exhausted. A young man named Cowan I hen plunged in and succeeded in getting M'Leod anil the latter's first would-b« rescuer ashore. They were both uncoil seious for some time.
