LOWER lIUTT GYMNASIUM. (From Onr Special CorrcstioL>''ont.i Last nijjht at tlio Lower Iliitt the official opening of the gymnasium in connection with tho Kccreation Club took place. Thoro was a very largo attendance. Tho building, which is situated on tho top of tho Town Hall, is a very largo one, and is fitted uii with every modem equipment essential to gymnastic training. Mr. E. P. Bunny (Mayor), who performed tho opening ceremony, congratulated tho promoters for their foresight in eroding such a lino structure, for tho uso of the young men of tho Hutt. Mr. J. T. Hawthorn, who was the chief mover in tho project, deserved . tho heartiest thanks for tho great boon conferred oil tho Hutt Borough.
Tho first portion of the entertainment was n turn of ball-punching by Mr. Cairns and his Jlutt pupils. Mr. Cairns and his pupils also exercised their prowess in a tiirn of "Swedish drill." In tho second part of tho programino those present wero treated to various rounds of sparring, between Tailored and Burns (welter-weight amateur and professional champion respectively), Lepper and Stuart (feather-weights), Adamsou and Sullivan (welter-weights), and an exhibition by Mr. Cairns and his pupil Gadsby. Tho whole of tho boxing exhibition met with great approval.
LOWER HUTT COURT. Dr. M'Artlmr, S.M., presided over the monthly sitting of tho Lower Hutt S.M. Court yesterday. A number of _ uffenders for riding bicycles without lights between sunset and sunrise pleaded guilty, and wero each convicted and fined 55., with Court costs 7s„ in default ordered to undergo fortyeight hours' imprisonment. The names of tlio offenders wero William Skinner, Victor Yates, Arthur French, Thomas flayes, and William Wallace. One first offender pleaded guilty to a chargo of drunkenness, and was convicted and discharged. George M'Coll, for driving a threehorse dray with a load of metal over the Melling Bridge, tho weight of the whole being in excess of tho maximum tonuago specified in tho by-law (two tons), was fined 205., with costs 15s. Gd., with tho option of forty-eight hours' detention. Tho police proceeded against John Hagon lor using obscene langungo on. tho Hutt railway station. Defendant pleaded guilty. Tho police stated that Hagon was a Territorial who, with others, was goin" to Troutham. Hagon was not wearing his uniform, and, in consequence, was not allowed to board tho train. This was what led np to tho obscene language. Tho magistrate cautioned tlio offender, stating that this sort of conduct was calculated to givo tho volunteers abadnamo, and also caused, articles to bo written in tho press in connection with their conduct. Hagon was convicted and ordered to como up for sentenco wlion called upon. Judgment was given for plaintff in each of tho following civil cases Francis E. Bryan v. Charles Wyatt, £2 65., costs 55.; Frank L. Simpson v. Mrs. Bevan, £3 95., costs 75.; samo v. W. E. Timmings, £2, costs 55.; samo v. William H. Nimmo, £1 2s. 9d.; samo v. Mrs. Dcckson, £1 145., costs Bs.; saino v. H. F. Ilarloy, £1 13s. Gd., costs ss. Judgment summonses—Allen Talbert v. Arthur H. Mudgway, £1 os. 2d., debtor ordered to pay on or before February 20, or, in default, undergo three days'' in gaol; A. Kerr v. W. E. Timraings, £5 ss. Gd., debtor ordered to pay on or beforo February 20, or 6pend seven days in gaol.
