SUNDAY REFRESHMENTS.
THE SELLING OF "SOFT" DRINKS. (By ToleEraph—Press Association.) Auckland, February 4. A deputation waited oil the Prime Minister this morning and complained of tho attitude of the police in instituting prosecutions with respect to tho salo of soft drinks on Sundays, even at table, to customers, instead of tea or coffee. Twentyfour summonses have been issued. It is understood 104 more aro impending. Tho police had stated that under Section I" of tho Police Offences Act they had power to close refreshment rooms altogether on Sundays. Tho Prime Minister promised to confer on the subject with tho Crown I,aw officials. If hardship was being infiictcd by tho law the only remedy was an amendment next, session. Personally, ho was in favour of soft drinks being obtainable on Sundays, but it was tho duty of tho Legislature to ohoclc any movement in tho direction of initiating tho system of general trading on tho Sabbath that was going on, in other countries.
