RELIGION AND ITS HISTORY.
IN THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA BUI- „ TANNICA. One of the* great outstanding feature's in the now edition of tho Encyclopaedia Britaunica, which is being published by the Cambridge L'nivc-rsity Press, will be tho largo amount of spaco devoted to Keligions and tho History of Religions. The editor of tho Encyclopaedia, Mr. Hugh Chisholm, allotted to his assistant editor, Mr. Alison Phillips, the important duty of reorganising this section of the work.
Every aspect of religious life has been dealt with by tho first authorities -of tho day. . For instance, tho treatment of the Bible is a remarkable. example of i tho thoroughness with which the work has been done.- ■
Canon Driver, Regius Professor ■ of Hebrew at Oxford, has written on tho Old Tostament, Mr.-J. F. Stenning on "Texts and Versions of tho Old Testament," and Professor G. B.- Gray- on. "Textual and Higher Criticism." Canon Driver is also responsible for tho important articlo on "The Chronology! of tho Old Testament." As regards the "New Testament, Dr. Sanday has written . tho introduction and also. on ■ tho Canon. Professor Kirsopp' Lake, of Leiden, has taken "Texts, and Versions" and "Textual Criticism!'for his subjects. Professor F. C. Burkitt, "Tho Higher Criticism," and Mr. C. H. Turner.."The Chronology of the New Testament." Miss Panes . writes on the English Bible and Canon Hensley Henson deals with tho Revised Version. '
With regard to the other religions of tho world tie principal writer on tho Jewish religion is Mr.'lsrael Abrahams. Dr. Fariioll and Sir. Cyril Bailey have taken the articles on the Greek and Roman religions respectively. Rev. G. W. Thacker is responsible, for tho' articlo on tho Mohammedan religion, the articles on .Mohammedan law and institutions being written by Professor D. B. Macdonald. Buddhism is dealt with,by Professor Rhys Davids, Brahmanism and Hinduism by Professor Eggeling, 'of Edinburgh: whilst further distinction is. given to tho work by the erudite and fascinating articles'by Mr.F. C. Conybearo on certain of the medieval heresies and subjects connected with comparative religion generally. . Finally, the article on religion -itself'has been written by Dr. Est'lin Carpenter, Principal of Manchester College, Oxford, and. Mr., R. R. Marett, reader in Social Anthropology at Oxford. ...
