FAMINE IN CHINA.
'AID FOR SUFFERERS. DISPOSAL OF CONTRIBUTIONS. A meeting of the, subscribers to the. fund, for,the. relief of sufferers by famine, in the Chinese provinces of Kiangsu and Anhiu, by which two and a half millions of people have been reduced to a state of , terrible destitution, was held at the Chinese Consulate, Burnell Avenue, last evening. The Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Wallis) presided. The' Chinese Consul stated' that £214 Bs. ■ had been received to date from the whole of New Zealand. The greater part of the. sum had been received* from Wellington donors. It' was resolved to cable at once the sum of £200, to the. Ho'ng-kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, to be hanqed to tho Central China Farnino Relief Committee for distribution. Tho meeting regretted that.there had not: bee* a better responso to the appeal, and expressed a nopo that Now Zealanders would yet realise tho terriblo suffering of the starving millions and send in subscriptions without delay. Tho Chinese Consul,; ■■ Mr. ;■ Yung Liang Hwang, will recoivo and acknowledge all . subscriptions and remit same to the Hong-kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation -from time to time. Of the sum of £214 Bs., acknowledged below, the Chinese havo subscribed • £147 lis. and Europeans a total amount of £66 17s.
