NOTES AND COMMENTS

[Bt GtEJfCOE.]

The Pahiatua Racing Club's meeting oil Wednesday, ; wheii the. Pahiatua Cup wiil.be run.-

J. Delahey : left for Sydney-last night to consider an. offer that has been made him'to act as trainer and hurdle horseman. -Prior to leaving tho. Dominion, iD'elaiiey sold. Merry Lawn 'to trainer J. 'Ha'tha'way for 100 guineas, and his jo!|Jjerf,;no,r_sp Pearl Reef was, given away..

Da'unton, Sinapis, arid Surmount wore shipped homo to Blenheim yesterday, after having competed unsuccessfully at the ; Wellingto- Racing Club's' meeting. : 'Bronze-is a very sensible filly-for ,a two-year-old. 'Yesterday, when being placed aboard the Maori, bound for Lyt.telton, she walked into the loading-box: as quietly as an old war horse. V

Despite'tho fact that she has been a failure in public; Directoire still remains in the Yaldhurst stable, controlled by R. J. Mason, The Wairiki filly was backed, heavily in tho Kaitoke Hack Handicap on Wednesday last, but her rider was over-anxious at the barrier, and the three-year-old took the tape's in her mouth. ; This spoilt whatever chance she had of beating Contralto. •■ .•'.' ".'■"-■■ :'■'-.:■:

"The' Pilgrim's Progress -filly Moorish Maid has failed' to stand training, and is being returned'to her owner at Warigariui.

Lady Medallist was left ,in'the Jack; son' Stakes in error, and is an,unlikely starter, Last year she was saddled up in this event, and finished last. She seems to have lost her sprinting ability,! and in both her races at Trentham she was whipping in the field at tho end of the first furlong.

.The Canterbury breeder Mr. J. B. Reid went north after the second day of tho Wellington meeting on a business, trip., ■ Ho returned to Wellington last evening. ; . _ \ -:::. J: .-' 'j

/ Takapuna will hold its summer meeting this .afternoon, when the principal item will bo tho Cup, ruii over a tenfurlong course. The gootl form of Soultbria at the Ellerslie meeting will ensure the position of favourite for Mr.. J. Roulston s inare, the more especially as U. Deeley has contracted to ride her.

J. H. Prosser Is having no fewer than nine yearlings sent to. him to train,, and, ,on this account, he has determined to quit all the second-raters in his stables. Most probably he will hold a clearing sale at an early date. ...

During Mr. R. T. Turnbull's absence in. England his horses will be leased by their trainer, J. H. Prossor.

Mr. W. P. M'Beth, owner of Crucinella, was present at Launceston to see his mare contest tho Hobart Cup, in which she was beaten out of a place. There is a steep incline at the back of the oourso along the banks of tho Derwent, and this may havo been too much for tho handsome Now Zoalaiid-b'red mare,' who had a big weight to carry.

Three yearlings were -shipped to Christchurch by the Maori last night. They included tho Charlemagne'll— Lady. Helen colt, which brought 775 guineas at the recent Waikanao sale.

It is said that a well-known, personage recontly netted quito a handy sum by representing himself as clerk for a largo firm of bookmakers. Any. of his clients, who may not have been paid, aro debarred from proceeding against him by certain provisions in the Gaming Act of 1007.

W. Young rodo four winners at tho Karioi races on Thursday. ,

The chief event at tho Karioi races was tho Karioi Cup, for which there were four acceptances, Mr. Tienu Puru's The Native.went.to tho post as favourite, but Darby Paul, tho next best-fancied horse, .owned by Mr. Marton Coffey, of Ohakuno, proved to bo the winner of what was tho finest contested race of tho day. Tho win was a popular one, and tho horse, owner and jockey woro cheered to tho echo. The cup, which was given by Mr. George last year's winner, becomes Mr. Coffey's property right out. Darby Paul is a half-brother (by St. Paul) to tho Grand National winner, Compass. v When ono thinks pf tho great success of Lady Medallist on tho racing track it seems extraordinary that no New Zealand sportsman over tried to secure another. St. Alwyno. youngster to race Latchet, who raced a couple of seasons ago, was by tho sire of Lady Medallist, but both were bought at the same sale. Not only has Lady' Medallist done well in New Zealand, but several of St. Alwyne's stock have been winners in Australia.

The Now Zealand-bred Crystal; who until rccoutly carried J. Tomlinson's colours in 14.2 company at meetings of the Associated Clubs (says the "Arrow"), now occupies a box m the stablo of the veteran Brisbano trainer, H. Walsh. By Mensckiltoff from Chrysolite (half-sister to Nordernfcldt), this mare is very attractively bred. Sho is. now tho property of. Mr. S. A. Taylor,, of tho Logic Plains Stud, who is' also in possession of her dam. Prior to being relegated .to tho stud, however, Crystal is to bo given a chance of distinguishing herself on the turf in tho northern State, and goes into work immediately.
