GOVERNMENT LIFE ANO A.M.P. .< ANNUAL MATCH. The twenty-fifth annual match between those; ancient rivals, the Government Life and A.M.P., took place at the College Ground yesterday, play commencing at 11 a.m. A.M.P. opened with Hickson and Wilkes, and the bowling was entrusted to Spenee and Houston. When Hickson had made only 4 no was clean bowled by Silence, the first wicket falling. at S runs. Wilkes hit out in merry fashion for 12, and Barclay registered 12 not out. None of the other batsmen could do much with the bowling, however. Spence (seven for 1 26) bowled well, changing pace and length with judgment. Houston, (three for 20) was also an effective trundler. The "Government Life" fielding was firstclass. Evan took two well-judged catches in the "country." Kelling effected a difficult running catch, and Niven, "behind the sticks," did good service. "Government Life" commenced their innings at 12.30 p.m., Paul and Prain being the pioneer batsmen. Both players opened cautiously,, but later on combined defiance, with defence.. The attack commenced to tiro, and runs came freely. At the rnu.cheon adjournment no separation had been effected, and the score s'tood at 71 (Paul 47 not out, Prain 21 not out). Shortly after play had been resumed a heavy shower of rain caused a cessation of play for some time. ' On again resuming, the score was carried to 104, when Paul, in jumping out to drive, was bowled by Barclay. ■ Ho gave no chance ih compiling 61, and hit seven boundaries He scored freely all round the wicket. Kelling, who followed, had scored three when lie was ' bowled. At this ■ stage rain set in for the day, and play had to be finally abandoned', leaving the "Gov. eminent Life" victorious.by 8 wickets and 51 runs. ' Train (45 not out) played a solid, defensive innings. He, however, hit seven boundaries. The A.M.P. fielding was very good, Hickson, Columb, and Wilson being specially prominent.* The teams were entertained at luncheon, the head officers of the respective offices being present, aud, in. the afternoon, tea was dispensed among the guests. As stated, this is the twentyfifth match between the two ofiices, A.M.P. having won 13 matches and the "Government Life" 12. Scores:—
