TRAMS FOR HASTINGS.

THE MOVEMENT SET AFOOT. Says our Hastings correspondent:—A public meeting convened by: the Mayor (Mr. J. A. Miller) was held in the Theatre on Wednesday evening for tho purpose of considering the question of tramways for Hastings. There were about fifty persons present, and an animated discussion ensued. At the outset the subject of municipal versus private enterprise was prominent, some wishing to block any chnnce of the trams being owned by a private company. They claimed that it would be better to wait a few years longer if necessary than permit any other ownership than that of the municipality; The feeling of the meeting was strongly in favour of municipal ownership and control, but thoso present refused to go tho length of definitely barring offers from private firms, intimately the following. motion was carried unanimously:— "That in the opinion of this meeting the time is opportune for tire serious consideration by the council of provision of trams for Hastings, and that the council be asked to obtain a scheme or schemes for submission to tho ratepayers at an early date." It is understood that the council will now prepare a municipal scheme, and will at tho same time invite offers from private firms.
